  • GEMS teachers earn National Geographic honor

     
    GEMS Grade 5 teacher Taneal Sanders has been named a National Geographic Certified Educator. She is the third GEMS World Academy Chicago faculty member to earn this honor.

    The National Geographic Educator program recognizes preschool-through-12 educators who are “committed to inspiring the next generation of explorers, conservationists, and change makers.” Teachers in the United States and Canada are eligible for certification.

    Explore a Unit: Healthy Bodies (Junior Kindergarten)


    The junior kindergartners at GEMS World Academy Chicago hit the gym, created homemade mucus and shopped for nutritious foods during the rich and fascinating Human Bodies unit this school year.

    The central idea of the unit is that the health of our minds and bodies affects how we function. Our junior kindergarten teachers say the unit is a highlight of the year.

    “It’s fun to teach because you see the students develop a sense of themselves,” said teacher Erica Holman. “They become more confident about their bodies, the strength they have. And they become more aware of the connections they have to other human beings.”

    Explore a Unit: A More Perfect Union (Grade 8)


    Mark Zuckerberg, the U.S. Constitution and rap music each played a part in an innovative unit recently completed by the eighth-graders at GEMS World Academy Chicago.

    The unit, called “A More Perfect Union,” started with a close reading of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. It ended with live rap battles in which students delivered rhymes that debated or commented on current social issues.
