GEMS students win prize in film competition

Two GEMS World Academy Chicago students have won a prize for a short film they submitted to the 2017-2018 GEG (Google Education Groups) Chicagoland Student Film Festival.

GEMS seventh-graders Giancarlo and Jake created their film, “In Sarah’s Shoes,” for the second annual film fest, the goals of which are “building student voice, creating authentic audience, and empowering student agency.” The theme of this year’s fest is “In Another’s Shoes.”
Giancarlo and Jake’s film was selected as the winning entry in the “Best Day in the Life” category. Their film provides a vivid snapshot of the life of Sarah, a 28-year-old woman with Down syndrome. To view, click on the video link below.
The students have been invited to attend a celebration of all the winning films at Google’s Chicago office on Feb. 1. After the films are screened, the filmmakers will share a 1-minute reflection about their experiences to the audience.
A third GEMS seventh-grader, Amal, received an honorable mention for her film, titled “In a Flower’s Shoes.”
Congratulations to all three budding filmmakers! The films demonstrate the creativity, innovation and empathetic world-view that are core elements of our mission and approach.
