As proud as we are of what happens inside GEMS World Academy – Chicago, we're also proud of the distinctive, colorful building our school community calls home.
Our building has been profiled in the January issue of Architectural Record, a leading publication in the industry. Our school appears in the issue along with schools from Germany, England and Brazil, among other countries.
The school, which was designed by bKL Architecture, both complements and reinforces the educational mission of GEMS World Academy – Chicago, which is to "inspire inquiring, knowledgeable, reflective and intercultural learners to become morally responsible leaders with the skills and attributes necessary to create a more connected and prosperous world."
GEMS' outstanding teachers use the purpose-built classrooms and labs to spark students' imaginations, provide state-of-the-art tools and facilitate close teacher-student engagement. Geoff Jones, head of school at GEMS, said the design of the building also helps strengthen the student community.
"The vertical design encourages older students to interact and become academic role models for younger students," he said.
The article cites the innovative exterior of the building, which stands out in the Lakeshore East neighborhood despite being surrounded by taller structures. It also discusses the warm and inviting interior of the building: "The generous reliance on glass gives the south-facing classrooms, library, dining room, and gymnasium abundant light and panoramic vistas." Later, the article states that "the classrooms are all that tech-savvy students and teachers might want in a thoughtfully designed ... new school."
The Architectural Record article isn't the first time our building has been praised. In the fall, it received an Award of Merit in the K-12 Education category of the annual Engineering News Record (ENR) Midwest's Best Projects Competition. And it was a featured site in the Open House Chicago architecture festival. More than 1,000 people toured the school in October as part of that event.
We're very happy to be able to educate children in such a beautiful building!
