GEMS World Academy Chicago broke new ground in early education when it opened its innovative Lower School in the fall of 2014. From the start, the opening of the school was envisioned as the first phase of a larger plan to build the city's premier preschool-through-Grade-12 learning community.
Toward that end, we continue to refine plans for Phase II: the creation of an Upper School building and program.
The new facility will reflect the same sense of design and purpose seen in the Lower School. GEMS World Academy Upper School students will learn in open, airy classrooms equipped with the latest technology. According to preliminary designs, the Upper School building will include:
- A digital theater and a media workshop with adjacent editing suite to encourage exploration of design and creativity
- Specialized laboratories dedicated to astronomy, astrophysics, automation and robotics
- A 500-seat multi-purpose auditorium, which will provide an impressive space for assemblies and performances
- A bright, open common area, where students can socialize, meet with teachers, work in small groups or study independently
The Upper School curriculum will continue the International Baccalaureate-based program launched in the Lower School. Our students will explore rigorous college-preparatory academic disciplines while also taking Field Studies work to new levels of sophistication. Students will be more deeply involved in the larger Chicago community, and they'll bring those experiences to the global stage.
We believe our new Upper School will inspire all students to be enthusiastic learners and true global leaders. For a closer look at the building's features, see the gallery below.
