GEMS receives formal authorization for MYP

GEMS World Academy Chicago, an independent private school, has received formal authorization from the International Baccalaureate for the school’s Middle Years Program, which serves students in grades 6 through 10.

Receiving this authorization indicates that GEMS meets the IB’s rigorous standards and follows all best practices when deploying the MYP.

“We are extremely proud,” Interim Head of School Andrew Sherman said in a letter to the community about the authorization. “The MYP is recognized around the globe as an innovative, student-centered educational framework.”

The authorization process included the submission of a comprehensive report about our teaching practices, as well as a 2-day site visit by a team of evaluators from the IB.

The evaluating team cited a number of the school’s strengths when it announced GEMS had been authorized:
  • The school has developed a culture that strongly promotes responsible action within and beyond the community.
  • The school systematically utilizes the resources and expertise of the community to enhance learning and embraces the opportunities available in the city.
  • MYP unit plans, in all subject groups, frequently include learning experiences that provide reflection on human commonality, diversity and multiple perspectives.
  • Teachers and students can give examples of learning experiences where students were encouraged to be actively responsible for their own learning.
The MYP is the second IB program for which GEMS World Academy Chicago has received formal authorization. The school earned authorization for the IB’s Primary Years Program in 2016. The PYP serves students in preschool through Grade 5.

GEMS has already started the authorization process for the IB Diploma Program, which will serve our future 11th- and 12th-graders. When the DP authorization process is complete, GEMS will offer a cohesive preschool-through-Grade-12 IB experience that few schools can match.

The IB framework is based on student inquiry and relies on integrated, transdisciplinary instruction. A higher percentage of IB graduates have been accepted at top colleges and universities than the population at large. (See chart below.) We at GEMS are preparing the designers, innovators, change-agents and leaders of tomorrow.
